2006/8/26 First Haircut!!!Well, first of all I just want to ask everyone to keep the Olson family in their thoughts and prayers. Carole was scheduled to have Baby Joseph yesterday. We have all been thinking so much of them and think they are just a wonderful family.
Kylie got her first real haircut today. She went to the hairdresser that I have been going to since I was about 14. She is just awesome and has come to really know us through all of these years. Kylie was so, so good and so cooperative. We have been talking with her about it for a week now so she kind of knew what to expect. I just told my mother when we were there that we never took Kylie into the shop to see Melody (hairdresser) because we were always so worried about her breathing in all of those smells and scared it might cause her some breathing trouble, but I must say that is not something I was even worried about at this point. It is nice to come to that feeling. Anyway, she just cut and cut for probably 20 minutes. We gave Kylie our digital camera so that she could replay all the pictures to keep her busy and her head down. By the way, it is just amazing how kids can operate electronics like that. She knew exactly what to do. Kids are so smart. She couldn't have been any better. We got all of the baby hair cut off so that it can really grow back evenly and thicker. It is really cute, but I must say it will take a little getting used to because it is pretty short. She really does look a lot older now. It is amazing how fast 2 1/2 years has gone by. I really wish it would slow down a bit. I will post pictures of her within the next couple of days. I did make her wear pigtails this morning to gymnastics and almost had second thoughts about the haircut after seeing how cute she is with those pigtails!!
School is up and running now and I have officially been back to work for two weeks now. I really miss Kylie this year while I am working. Once again, we had a great and relaxing summer together. It was truly perfect. I just love so much coming home to my little Kylie. She seemed a little upset with me the first week that I started working, but seems to be adjusting to the whole thing this past week. I guess she just couldn't quite figure out why I would leave during the day. Of course, she absolutely loves the time she gets to spend with her Nana while I am working. They have a truly amazing bond. We are all so lucky to have Nana. Unbelievable lady!!!!!!
Kylie also started her dance class this past week. She is going to my sister-n- law's dance studio. I am so excited about this. There are about five other little girls in her class. Michelle (sister -n- law) had to order Kylie some little ballet and tap shoes. Her foot is so little. She is just now getting into a size 4. It has not grown very fast to say the least. It is kind of hard to find her real shoes that are not crib shoes because of her size. I guess you know I manage to find a few...lol!!! (That is my excuse to get her those really cool shoes.) Anyway, Kylie did get her little pink tutu that is absolutely adorable!! So funny!! Funny story: The class starts with 15 minutes of gymnastics and then it is 15 minutes of ballet and 15 minutes of tap after that...well all the little girls change from their ballet shoes to their tap shoes and of course Kylie doesn't have hers in yet so she decided to go and pick up the teachers tap shoes to change into. I thought that was pretty smart of her. She is really kind of a mess (in a great way). Smart little girl. So, Kylie enjoyed the class. I know we need to get Kylie into Mother's Day Out program, but I still think I am going to wait until at least the spring if not next fall so that Kylie can have another winter of being healthy. I just think that is so important for her lungs. She is participating in lots of little activities with children but in a way that we can be a little more involved and make sure her hands are clean and using Purell at all times. Purell is our best friend at the Dudley household. We have two huge bottles and still require people to apply that to their hands for Kylie's sake. She has been through and overcome far too much to care to ask someone to Purell their hands.
Tonight we had dinner with my parents. It was their 39th wedding anniversary. I have such wonderful parents and we had a great time. Kylie got a little bit squirmy towards the end, but was good considering she had gymnastics this morning and a haircut. She had a really hard time taking a nap today so she is already asleep for the night. Kylie sleeps so well at night. I know we are fortunate for that. Well, I guess that is it for now so I guess I will watch the Cowboy's play football. Thanks for checking in with us!!!!!
Julie 2006/8/11 UpdateFirst of all I want to start by saying how sad I am feeling about the news of Baby Joseph. Please visit his page to find more information. I think Carole, his mother, is such a neat person and I will be thinking and praying for her and her entire family during this difficult time. I am just so sorry.
Update from the last blog:
Thankfully, my mother just got home from the hospital and is resting. She had a colonoscopy and two days after had horrible bleeding. They found that her entire colon was filled with blood and when doing another colonoscopy to determine what was going on the doctor found that where a polyp was removed it had formed an ulcer with a clot that was on top of a blood vessel. Only 1:10,000 ever have this type of complication. We all said now what is it about this family that has one in whatevers. Come on!! Her blood pressure had dropped pretty low and she was given two pints of blood. We are lucky she went in when she did because apparantly this situation could have not turned out very good. The doctor is pretty certain that he was able to repair this and stop the bleeding. My mom is not the type to just rest and is having a difficult time resting. She is just a busy type of person and I know this is hard for her. She is just such a blessing to our family and I am so glad she is better. What a scare?
Kylie's Doctor visit update:
Wednesday we went to the endocrinologist for a follow up to determine if growth hormones are needed at this time. The doctor is somewhat happy with how she has grown over the past few months. The awesome news is that she grew two inches since April....this is amazing because she has had a hard time getting a little taller. She is actually almost on the 5%ile for height. This is huge!! Her weight did increase about 10 ounces and she is up to 22.3 lbs. She is pretty far below the growth curve for weight still, but at least she is gaining. I have really been so worried about this appointment thinking that she might mention that Kylie needs her g-tube replaced. The doctor assured me that at this point that is not on her mind. I think g-tubes are great but, it was also very hard to get Kylie to eat (orally) while she was being tube fed. You know we put her through an in-patient feeding program to help her learn to eat and wean her from the tube and I think she has worked so hard with feeding that it would be a huge setback to have her tube fed again. Anyway, not something I need to worry about after talking with the doctor. Kylie eats really well and eats alot. She is just very active and still using calories for healing and growing. She was so impressed that Kylie is only on two medications now. That is down from the 17 meds that she came home with from the hospital. I am sure that had an effect on her growth at some point as well. YEAH Kylie!!!! You just keep on eating anything you will eat.
The same day we also saw her surgeon so that he could take a look at her g-tube site. On a side note, it was great to see him because he recently had a horrible crash with the helicopter he was piloting. We chatted about that and he said he feels grateful as well. I just really think the world of him because he really advocated for Kylie when she was hospitalized. He was the one that took us aside and said maybe we needed a second opinion about her being trached. He is just an amazing individual. Well, he felt that eventually Kylie will need a little surgery to repair the g-tube stoma. He advised us that he felt at this point it might be a little much for Kylie as she is small and it is not at all an urgency to have this repaired as long as it wasn't causing Kylie pain or bleeding out too much. He just said with her history he felt they would probably have to intubate her for the procedure and just felt that we could wait. Needless to say, I was grateful to hear his opinion and was glad we can wait until she gets a little bigger. He thought she really was doing well and looked good. So, all in all that is wonderful news for our little Kylie. She continues to amaze us each and every day.
Well, I guess I will close...I started working again today so that kind of was a bummer. I missed Kylie today at work. We just had a great summer together!!!! Thanks for checking in and please keep all CDH babies and families in your prayers (especially Baby Joseph's family). 2006/8/9 Please say some prayersPlease pray for Julie's mom (nana) and for our little one Kylie.
Julie's mother had gone in for some routine testing and had some tests done. Since the test she has had some bleeding...she is now in the hospital to allow the doctors to keep an eye on her. I am sure she will be ok but still pray for her.
For Kylie...well as many of you all know she had her feeding tube removed this year. It has closed and has tried to heal but it has started to bleed some so we decided to schedule a visit with our surgeon. Julie and Kylie are meeting with them today to see what is going on and to see if she may need day surgery. If she goes in for surgery it should be only day surgery...this will be her 6th surgery. So please pray for her to keep her strong and healthy through all of this.
Thank you and God bless all CDH babies and their families.
We will keep you all informed on what is going on.
2006/8/1 A VERY long time........Once again, it has been a long time since I have posted. I am bummed because I am about to have to go back to work for the school year. Oh well, I have had a wonderful summer with my Kylie and Nana will get to see her again more so I can't argue with that.
What have we been up to over the past month..hmmmm...well first of all, Kylie's nana (my mother) just had a birthday party at our house. We had a great time and Kylie was actually able to understand, in her own way, that it was Nana's birthday and not hers. She sang "Happy Birthday" and just gleamed all the way through the song and helped her blow her candle out. The weekend before that Kylie attended her first dress up party and Snow White was there. She had a good time and thought it was all pretty funny. The party was for a little girl in her gymnastics class. Kylie continues to excel at gymnastics and really has gotten so much better with her skills and following directions. She absolutely loves to go to gymnastics. She expecially likes to watch all the big girls. You know Kylie took swimming lessons at the beginning of the summer and we have continued working on the things she learned in the lessons. She absolutely loves to get in the pool now and will kick and tolerates putting her head under more and more. We have used the pool alot this summer because it seems like it has just been hot this year. We had a chuch party this last weekend and it was so fun to watch Kylie interact with all of the kids of all ages. She is such a social little one. That is great!!
I worked today for a little while and got to test two little four year old children. It was great and gives me a great perspective to where I think Kylie is developmentally. She has just done great considering all that she has been through so far. We are blessed!! I am anxious to start deciding on a pre-school for Kylie and will begin researching those options this year so that when she turns three maybe she can go once a week. It is a little hard to let her go just because I still worry about her catching something from others. I know it is going to happen, but as many times as I have heard her doctors preach to us about keeping her well and away from others it is still hard to let go. As far as Kylie's health is concerned I will say we have not had to visit a doctor this entire summer. We are going next week to the endocrinologist for a follow up appointment and then to see her surgeon because her G-tube site just doesn't look like it has closed and healed up the way it is supposed to. He mentioned to us before that since she had the tube in so long that she may require a day surgery to go in and close the opening from the inside. Anyway, we will just worry about that when and if the time comes. Probably not a big deal at all...I just don't like thinking about that right now. I will be curious to see what the endocrinologist has to say because I really think Kylie seems like she has grown. She seems to still be holding at 21.6 lbs. but this past week she did weigh 22 on two different days. She is just going to be a little petite girl which is quite nice in my opinion. She eats like a horse and all day long so who knows!!!
Well, exciting news!! We will be seeing Ms. Audrey tomorrow. We are excited!! Anyway, thanks for checking in and please continue to pray for all the CDH kiddos and those expecting. |
